Update - September 12, 2025

It has been a little over two months since the death of Dr. Maklin Eugene, Founder and Medical Director of New Hope Hospital

As all of us know, when there is a passing, particularly one so unexpected and untimely, there are many issues that need to be decided and many legal filings and readjustments made to operations of an organization.  That is what has been underway in Haiti and there are still things that need to be completed.

Having said that, as of this date, New Hope Hospital is operating without interruption. New Hope had a medical director who had worked with Dr. Eugene for some years; fortunately; Dr. Jean Michel has stepped up and continues to be leading New Hope in day-to-day operations.  The staff is stable and continues to serve its people.

For now, some of the administration duties are being carried out by Lidwine Labieville (Eugene), Dr. Eugene’s widow.  Lidwine has been involved in New Hope along side of Dr. Eugene and is very qualified and capable to help direct daily administrative duties.

Partners 4 New Hope, Inc. is continuing business as usual.  In that we are devastated by the loss of Dr. Eugene, we believe he is with us in carrying on.  That would certainly have been his wish, to continue on with his dream and vision. Under the new leadership, New Hope continues to welcome US teams who have been coming for years.  The US eye clinic will be serving at New Hope this month and we are hopeful, all of the other faithful medical teams will continue to come.  In one area in particular, hope may be on the horizon. The new leadership continues to work on some of the things Dr. Eugene was hopeful for and one of those is to replace the help for AIDS patients.  This care and assistance at New Hope was abruptly and devastatingly stopped when USAID was dismantled. We pray this much needed help becomes a reality.

Most people in Haiti live day to day, that is the approach we are taking at Partners 4 New Hope.  We have directed many of the duties Dr. Eugene did outside of the hospital to our other partner in Haiti, Windy Previl at the Cap Haitien Ministry Center.  When we chose Windy to help Dr. Eugene many years ago, we did not expect this but as they say “God provides”.  Windy is now handling building of wells, feeding programs, Microfinance duties and education projects.  These initiatives were passions of Dr. Eugene and he made it all work, while running the hospital.  As we always knew, he was everything to everyone in Northern Haiti. We are very fortunate to have Windy; he is qualified and confident to take on these ministries and he works closely with Dr. Michel and Lidwine.

I hope this answers some questions you might have, particularly as it relates to New Hope Hospital.  We continue to take in donations and send them to New Hope on a monthly basis. As I have said many times, “Life is and has been difficult for a very long time in Haiti, during these most difficult of times is when they need us the most”.

So, we hope and pray you will continue donating to New Hope Hospital which is a tangible way to show our love and support for our brothers and sisters in Haiti. It is also a way to honor the legacy of our beloved Dr. Maklin Eugene.

“The King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Dr. Eugene’s dream for a hospital was built on story after heart-wrenching story.

As a doctor working at small clinics in northern Haiti, Dr. Eugene watched as his fellow Haitians suffered due to lack of medical care. A father lost five children because they were poisoned, and the hospital was two hours away. A mother spent years trying to get pregnant, only to lose her child because the midwife did not properly handle the umbilical cord.

He knew there was a better way.

An Urgent Request:

April 2025

Recently, we received a heart-wrenching message from Dr. Euegne. He wasn’t asking for himself—but for 512 HIV and tuberculosis patients whose lives now hang in the balance.

“For years,” he wrote, “we cared for them completely—providing not just medication, but food, help with transportation, home visits, even schooling for their children. They never had to worry about the cost of care. We made sure of that.”

But now, that support is gone.

A freeze on USAID funding has cut off every resource this clinic depended on to care for its most vulnerable patients. Twenty staff members have already been sent home. The clinic is overwhelmed. And still, more patients keep showing up—desperate, sick, and out of options.

“They will die,” Dr. Eugene wrote simply, “if we cannot help them.”

This isn’t just a crisis—it’s a matter of life and death. But we can stand in the gap.

With your help, we can restore essential care—medication, food, and hope—for these 512 men, women, and children.

Please, don’t look away. Join us in answering this urgent need.

Your support brings healing to babies like Frankson.

Frankson was 18-months-old when he developed a cough and a fever. His mother knew she couldn’t afford treatment, but even if she could, there was no clinic in her town. She and Frankson live in a rural area of Northern Haiti that not even motorbikes can reach.

Then, she heard about New Hope Hospital and made the journey there. At most hospitals in Haiti, she would be denied care before a doctor even saw her son because she couldn’t pay. But because of the generosity of donors like you, Frankson’s mother was able to see a doctor and receive treatment at New Hope Hospital. Frankson is now healthy and well, all because of your support.

Since New Hope Hospital opened its doors in October 2016, thousands of Haitians now have access to medical care.

The stories of needless death or lack of access to care now have a different ending. Lives are being saved rather than lost. Nevertheless, struggles remain.

New Hope Needs You. Each morning, Dr. Eugene prays that he will have enough funds to sustain the hospital’s daily operations. Because New Hope commits to serving any patient in need, even if they can’t pay upfront, Dr. Eugene relies on supporters like you to sustain this life-saving work.

Will you join Dr. Eugene in saving lives by supporting New Hope today?
